Founded six years ago, Savvy Co. is the brainchild of Toronto native Caity, who moved to the area and realized the Meaford area was missing one crucial thing: genuinely good coffee and standout drinks. As an advocate for shopping local, Caity’s goal was to build a community hub that extended through pop-ups, collaborations, and their very own SavvyFest!
Come by in the morning and it’s the kind of neighbourhood coffee shop where regulars know the routine, laptops open over cups of coffee and conversations seem to happen naturally between tables. Come back later and the coffee gives way to craft beer, under-the-radar wines, zero-proof pours, live music, trivia and a completely different kind of energy.
Wine lovers will want to spend a little extra time exploring the shelves. Savvy specializes in small-batch bottles from independent winemakers around the globe, from historic European terroirs and South American producers to low-intervention Ontario vineyards. The selection stays nimble and seasonal, giving you the chance to discover rare, high-character wines made with real heart, including bottles you’re unlikely to stumble across at the LCBO.
It’s a great opportunity to ask the Savvy team for a recommendation, pick up something new and bring it back to Skipping Rock Cottages to enjoy around the table, by the fire or overlooking Georgian Bay.

Savvy describes itself as being "thoughtfully curated, from morning to night," and after speaking with General Manager Kayla, we realized just how perfectly that sums up the experience.
In the morning, Savvy is a neighbourhood coffee shop.
Regulars stop by for their usual order. Friends catch up. People settle in to work for a few hours. Conversations start between tables, and before long, people who walked in separately are chatting with one another.
Later in the day, the energy shifts.
Coffee gives way to happy hour, wine, craft beer and zero-proof drinks. Trivia nights, live music, tastings and other events give those same regulars a reason to come back again.
As Kayla explained to us, there's a special culture that happens when you put a small coffee shop in a small town. People talk to one another. They connect. Newcomers become part of the conversation.
It's a community within the community, and we think that's a pretty special thing.

If it's your first visit to Savvy Co. Meaford, coffee is a very good place to begin.
Savvy serves espresso-based drinks made with Rufino Coffee, an Italian-style Toronto roaster that is selective about where its beans are served. Savvy is one of the few places this far north where you'll find them.
Order a latte, flat white or straight espresso, or keep it simple with their drip coffee.
Kayla tells us their dark roast is particularly popular, with many customers drinking it black because of how smooth it is. Although it's technically a dark roast, she says it drinks more like a medium.
And if you love it as much as the regulars do, Savvy also sells both espresso and drip beans to take home.
Our suggestion? Grab a bag on your way back to Skipping Rock Cottages and make the next morning's cottage coffee a little more special.
The Bottle Shop You Didn't Know You Needed
Savvy's shelves are where things get especially fun.
Rather than stocking the same products you'll find everywhere else, the team intentionally seeks out smaller producers that may not have access to the shelves of major retailers.
You'll find Ontario craft beer, interesting seltzers and other small-batch drinks, with products rotating regularly as Savvy gives different makers a chance to be discovered.
One of their staples is Son’s Brewing, but part of the experience is simply stopping in and seeing what's new.
It's the perfect excuse to pick up a few cans you've never tried before, bring them back to the cottage and create your own tasting flight overlooking Georgian Bay.
It's little experiences like these that make a Meaford weekend getaway feel even more memorable.

This was one of our favourite things to learn about Savvy.
Their non-alcoholic selection is treated with just as much care as their alcoholic one.

Instead of one token non-alcoholic choice, you'll find a thoughtfully selected assortment of zero-proof drinks from smaller producers too.

One description from a Savvy customer stuck with Kayla.
The customer told her that Savvy felt "so Toronto to be in Meaford."
And strangely enough, that might be one of the best ways to describe it.
There's a polish and creativity to the space that wouldn't feel out of place in a Toronto neighbourhood, but the experience is unmistakably small town.

In fact, Kayla estimates that on any given day, Savvy's customers can be roughly half locals and half visitors passing through the area.

Naturally, we had to ask Kayla what she'd recommend if we were putting together the ultimate Savvy haul for a weekend at Skipping Rock.
First: something with a raccoon on it.
Savvy's raccoon merchandise has developed a following of its own, including tote bags that make for a very fun souvenir. They also carry shirts featuring the shop and Meaford, perfect if you like bringing something home from the places you visit.
Then we'd add:

A mix of small-batch alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks

Savvy may have a small team, but they keep their calendar busy.

Because Savvy doesn't have its own kitchen, food pop-ups also become another opportunity to support small businesses. Local food vendors can set up on the patio, giving them visibility while giving Savvy guests something delicious to pair with their drinks.
During the colder months, the team continues finding reasons to gather. They're exploring ideas like late-night openings with board games and cards, bingo and more opportunities to bring local artists and makers into the space.
